Sitespecific installation at ‘Het Blauwe Veld’
The narrow office’ is an installation Het Blauwe Veld in Arnhem combined with clocks from the ‘9to5’ series. The ‘9to5’ series consist of office clocks that play with the experiences of a working day. A normal office job takes place between 0900 and 1700 with a duration of eight hours. These clocks however play with this timeframe. The clock called ‘six hour working day’ makes the time between 0900 and 1700 only six hours long. So you can go home around ‘1700’ but actually it is around 1500. The other clock is called ‘10 hour working day’ and instead of an eight hour workday it makes the time between 0900 and 1700 take 10 hours. So you can do more work without feeling guilty because you still go home around ‘1700’. The next day these clocks will be correct again at 09:00 so you don’t come late to your work.
For Het Blauwe Veld I made an office that is squeezed together over one axis into the narrow space of around 55cm. The same that I’m doing with time: squeezing and stretching. Resulting in an uncomfortable but also somewhat funny space. As the exhibition continued more and more work was put on the desk and the office.

'The narrow office' is een installatie Het Blauwe Veld in Arnhem gecombineerd met klokken uit de serie '9to5'. De serie ‘9to5’ bestaat uit kantoorklokken die spelen met de beleving van een werkdag. Een normale kantoorbaan vindt plaats tussen 09.00 en 17.00 uur en duurt acht uur. Deze klokken spelen echter met dit tijdsbestek. De klok genaamd ‘Six hour working day’ maakt de tijd tussen 09.00 en 17.00 uur slechts zes uur lang. Je kunt dus rond ‘1700’ naar huis gaan maar eigenlijk is het rond 1500 uur. De andere klok heet ‘Ten hour working day’ en in plaats van een werkdag van acht uur duurt de tijd tussen 0900 en 1700 uur 10 uur. Zodat je zonder schuldgevoel meer kunt werken omdat je toch rond ‘1700’ naar huis gaat. De volgende dag staan deze klokken weer om 09:00 uur zodat je niet te laat op je werk komt.
Voor Het Blauwe Veld heb ik een kantoor gemaakt dat over één as in de smalle ruimte van circa 55cm is samengeperst. Hetzelfde wat ik doe met de tijd: knijpen en strekken. Met als resultaat een ongemakkelijke maar ook ietwat grappige ruimte. Naarmate de tentoonstelling vorderde, kwam er steeds meer werk op het bureau en op kantoor.
